5-Paragraph Cause and Effect Essay Examples: Atheism
What are the main reasons that lead people to atheism?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines atheism as “a disbelief in the existence of deity; the doctrine that there is no deity.” According to the American Atheists Organization, atheism “is not a belief system nor is it a religion.” Rather, atheism is a lack of belief, in regards to supernatural beings, including, but limited to God. That is the one link that ties all atheist together, however, it is very difficult to find similar reasons on what leads one to atheism, there are many factors to take into count such as a person’s personal and life experiences, as well as their attitudes on these experiences. With that being said, we can see many similar reasons that have lead people to atheism.
Contrary to popular belief, what has lead many people to atheism, as we have read in the article Listening to Young Atheists: Lessons for a Stronger Christianity, is that many atheist have been exposed to religion since birth and many of them have religious backgrounds, which include attending church etc. This very popular link tying many together in the atheist soceity brings about many reasons on why those with religious backgrounds turned to atheism, such as being exposed to many different religions beside their own at an older age.
The reason many can struggle with that is because they were taught that only their religion was the correct one and only their God is the correct one to worship and it can lead to confusion and disbelief. Another main reason people become atheist is because faith is not enough to believe in something that cannot be proven, there is no tangible evidence that god exist, there is no certainty whatsoever.
Another reason that even religious people might grapple with, is that there is evil in this world. The reason that evil would cause people to become atheist may seem strange; however the idea that there is a pure God or form of power that would allow evil things to happen in the world is hard to grapple with. Why would a God that created this world for good reasons only let evil things such as murder’s occur? As we can see atheism tie’s into one’s own personal thought s and beliefs and ultimately their philosophy on life as a whole.
